Former Bâtonnier Jean-Marie Burguburu joins Debevoise’s Paris office
Paris and New York – January 31, 2011 – Debevoise & Plimpton LLP today announced that Jean-Marie Burguburu will become Of Counsel to the firm, based in its Paris office, effective February 1. He will focus his practice on high-stakes civil and criminal litigation, including litigation among shareholders and regulatory investigations.

Prior to joining Debevoise, Mr. Burguburu spent 40 years at Paris-based international firm Gide Loyrette Nouel where he became a partner in 1976 and advised international clients on intellectual property issues, white collar crime and corporate law. Mr Burguburu served as Bâtonnier de l’Ordre des Avocats à la Cour de Paris (Head of the Paris Bar) in 2004 and 2005, and was elected First Vice-President of the Union Internationale des Avocats in 2010. He served as a member of the Conseil de l’Ordre (Bar Council) from 1991 to 1993 and since 2006, and as a delegate member of the Caisse Nationale des Barreaux Français (French lawyers pension organization) from 1992 to 2004. Mr Burguburu has been a member of the Paris Bar since 1966.
Mr. Burguburu has been a member of the French delegation at the CCBE (Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe) since 2006 and is a member of the board of the UNCA (National Union of Lawyers’ Funds). He also served as a member of the board of the Institut des Hautes Etudes sur la Justice (Higher Institute for Justice Studies) from 1993 to 1999 and a member of the Conseil Supérieur de la propriété industrielle (High Council for industrial property) from 1996 to 2010. Mr. Burguburu is a Commander of the Légion d’Honneur.
